Becoming an IB World School – The IB Diploma in BCG

More than 5,000 schools so far have chosen to teach International Baccalaureate programmes, with their unique academic rigour and their emphasis on students’ personal development. Our school is already part of this amazing global network and is benefitting from the standards and practices the IB insist on.

The British College of Gava is on this journey to become an IB World School and teach the prestigious Diploma Programme from September 2021 in our growing sixth form. In June 2019 the school received its candidate status after a detailed application and we are currently in the consultancy phase getting support and training from the IB. In the spring and summer of 2020 we are training our secondary staff at international workshops so we will be ready to teach the broad and balanced IB Diploma.

The prestigious Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the unique DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay. Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service. Students choose courses from the following subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies (humanities); sciences; mathematics; and the arts. Students may opt to study an additional sciences, individuals and societies, or languages course, instead of a course in the arts.

Students will take three subjects at higher level (HL) and three at standard level (SL). HL and SL courses differ in scope but are measured according to the same grade descriptors, with students expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level.

The International Baccalaureate, and the Diploma Programme (DP) in particular, enjoys a high level of respect and recognition among the world’s higher education institutions. For students, success in the IB often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships, and other admissions related benefits at many universities. The IB Diploma is now recognised for direct entry in Spanish universities also.

Our school IB team is led by the Senior Leadership and our Diploma Coordinator designate, Rachel Fenton, supported by our CAS Coordinator designate , Danny Steadman. You can talk to them in person about our progress towards this important milestone in our school.

**The British College of Gava is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and pursuing authorization as an IB World School. Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org
